The Clearinghouse of River Valley Resources – Madison Indiana

The Clearinghouse of River Valley Resources – Madison Indiana

Just a block off Main St. in Madison, Indiana is a 1950 building that once housed a car dealership. You can’t buy a car there anymore but if you’re unemployed or underemployed, you can get an enormous variety of help. It’s called the Clearinghouse and it has provided a path to a good, satisfying job for a great many people over the years. Eleutherian College: A Sustainable Heritage

Eleutherian College: A Sustainable Heritage

A sustainable future will require green building practices for new buildings. But better yet, instead of a new building, repurpose an old. And if that old building drips with history, so much the better. For both those reasons, Eleutherian College in Lancaster, Indiana is worthy of notice. Rev. Thomas Craven, an ardent abolitionist from Ohio, had a dream of a school where blacks and whites, men and women could attend classes together. It provides an affordable space for entrepreneurs seeking to start new businesses. In addition to a place to operate, Venture Out offers…

Solar Chat: Ryan Zariki, Whole Sun Designs

Meet Ryan Zaricki, founder extraordinaire of Whole Sun Designs in Wadesville, IN. He grew up knowing that you don’t swim in the Ohio River, you don’t eat the fish, but that never sat right with him. After attending Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, he headed out to Colorado and worked in green buildings, learning skills in sustainable trades, thinking more critically about electricity and water. He was having fun. His dad needed his help building a house, so he found himself back in Southern Indiana, and he worked for another solar contractor for awhile, moving back and forth…

SunWind Power Systems

Location: 5324 Hanka Rd. Floyds Knobs, IN 47119, Floyd County Engineer Jeremy Coxon started teaching himself about renewable energy while working for the Lilly Corporation in Indianapolis. His job there, finding best practices for reliable energy management, taught him the economic value of systems that would not shut down when the electrical grid lost power. About ten years ago his family visited Germany. There, despite having far less solar and wind energy possible than we have here, renewable energy was booming. Germany continues to lead the world in renewable energy. Germany is well on the way to reaching its national…
